Fostering Innovation Through Inclusive Leadership: A Study of Technology Start-ups in Lagos
Abstract
Innovation is the lifeblood of technology start-ups, and leadership plays a pivotal role in cultivating an innovative work environment. This research explores the influence of inclusive leadership on employee innovative behavior in the burgeoning tech ecosystem of Lagos, Nigeria. Drawing on a sample of 250 employees from 50 technology start-ups, this study utilizes hierarchical linear modeling to test the proposed relationships. The results indicate that inclusive leadership is a strong predictor of innovative work behavior, both directly and indirectly, through the mediating effects of psychological safety and psychological empowerment. Furthermore, the study finds that this relationship is moderated by the level of perceived organizational support for innovation. These findings underscore the critical importance of fostering an inclusive culture to unlock the innovative potential of employees in high-growth, entrepreneurial environments. The paper discusses the theoretical contributions to the leadership and innovation literature and offers actionable recommendations for start-up founders and managers.
